Can you retake the EPA 608 if you fail?

Yes, you can retake the EPA 608, and the federal rule sets no retake limit or waiting period: each certifying program writes its own terms. ESCO Institute retakes only the failed section, CHEERS includes three attempts and SkillCat allows four (checked October 7, 2026).

Retakes

Retakes are allowed. Appendix D regulates the test itself and says nothing about retake limits, waiting periods or fees, so those come from the program you test with.

From score report to retake

  1. Find the section that fell short

Programs that grade by section, like ESCO, show which section fell short. How the line is drawn: the EPA 608 passing score.

  2. Check what your fee still covers

Included attempts differ by program, and so do retake fees; the totals are on EPA 608 certification cost by program.

  3. Rework that section only

At ESCO the passed sections stay passed, so the hours belong to the failed one: drill its questions, read why each wrong option is wrong, then check your margin on the timed mock exam.

  4. Book the retake

At SkillCat you'll wait at least 4 hours; at ESCO, booking less than 72 hours ahead adds a rush fee (checked October 7, 2026).

If a section comes back short

Does EPA require a waiting period between attempts?

No. The rule sets none; the 4-hour gap is SkillCat's own policy (SkillCat FAQ, checked October 7, 2026).

If I pass Core and fail Type III, do I sit Core again?

At ESCO, no: passed sections stay passed and Type III is retaken alone (ESCO exam page, checked October 7, 2026). Other programs may differ, and it's cheaper to ask before paying.

Will the retake repeat my questions?

It isn't designed to. Programs draw questions at random from EPA's bank and run more than one version at each testing event (40 CFR 82, Appendix D (a) and (e), eCFR as of October 5, 2026).
