Noexpiry date under current rules
Does it expire
EPA states that Section 608 technician credentials do not expire. The rule keeps EPA's right to add recertification later through a Federal Register notice (40 CFR 82.161(a)(5)); under current rules there's no such requirement.

Where the renewal idea comes from
It's borrowed from other credentials. NATE certification runs two years and renews with 16 continuing-education hours or a specialty retake, plus a fee of $30 for the first specialty and $5 for each additional one (NATE policies and fees, checked October 7, 2026). Some states and localities also license HVAC work on their own cycles (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked October 7, 2026). None of that changes the 608 card.

When the card is old or missing
Do I need to recertify for A2L refrigerants?
Not under Section 608, whose current rules set no renewal. A2L safety training is voluntary and separate, compared on EPA 608 vs A2L certification.
How do employers check an old certification?
Programs must publish online lists of technicians they certified since January 1, 2017, with an opt-out (40 CFR 82.161(b)(6), eCFR as of October 5, 2026); each issuer keeps its own. See EPA 608 certification lookup.
